Palau Suspends Guides While Investigating Underwater Confrontation
Tourism authorities imposed precautionary suspensions after an October 9 altercation at Siaes Corner; conflicting accounts remain unresolved and no responsibility has been assigned.

Palau authorities are investigating an underwater confrontation at Siaes Corner that reportedly involved two dive guides and visiting recreational divers on October 9.
The Bureau of Tourism and Koror State Government have said they are coordinating with relevant authorities. Individuals directly involved have been temporarily suspended from diving or tourism-related duties as a precaution while the investigation proceeds. Officials emphasized that the measure is not a finding of wrongdoing.
Accounts of the encounter conflict. One guide and a visiting Taiwanese diver alleged that they were struck and that masks, fins, a dive computer or other equipment were removed or damaged. Another diving professional who said he witnessed the event alleged that concerns about group positioning and dive procedures preceded the confrontation. A circulating video captures only part of the incident and does not resolve the competing claims.
Local reporting identifies Siaes Corner as a popular site near Ulong Rock Island. Like many Palauan reef dives, the location can involve groups sharing current-sensitive terrain, making clear briefings, group control and non-confrontational communication particularly important.
Regardless of how the investigation assigns responsibility, intentional interference with another diver’s regulator, mask, buoyancy equipment or propulsion at depth can create an immediate emergency. Lost breathing access, impaired vision, panic, separation or an uncontrolled ascent can turn a dispute into a fatal incident.
No criminal charges or final administrative findings had been announced in the sources reviewed. Operators and training agencies should await the evidence and formal findings while reinforcing that disagreements over positioning, wildlife interaction or site etiquette must be managed without physical escalation underwater.
