Olongapo Adds 60 Reef Structures at Driftwood Beach
A second reported deployment expands the Barangay Barretto restoration site days after divers, volunteers and environmental officials launched a cleanup and reef-building effort.

Olongapo City’s Agriculture Office says another 60 artificial-reef structures were deployed at Driftwood Beach Resort in Barangay Barretto on October 14, expanding a community-led coastal rehabilitation project supported by government agencies and local divers.
The new deployment follows the “Scuba-Surero and Artificial Reef Deployment” activity reported earlier in the week. Approximately 30 divers and non-diving volunteers participated in that event, removing marine debris and installing habitat structures with personnel, equipment and technical assistance from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Luzon.
The city described the newly placed units as eco-friendly “reef buds,” but it has not published technical specifications identifying their dimensions, weight, material formulation, anchoring method, deployment depth or exact layout. The available notices also do not establish a cumulative total for all phases of the project.
DENR officials have said the site will be monitored to assess whether the structures provide lasting ecological benefits. That distinction matters: deployment creates physical habitat, but improvements in fish abundance, species diversity or coral recruitment must be demonstrated through repeat surveys rather than assumed from installation alone.
The project is directly relevant to divers because local dive organizations participated in the work and could contribute to later monitoring through fixed-point photography, species observations and debris surveys. Driftwood Beach should not yet be presented as a new recreational dive site, however. Published coordinates, depths, navigation hazards, anchoring restrictions, management rules and public-access guidance are still needed before independent visits can be recommended.
