Nine Aquarium Dives That Bring the Ocean Within Reach

From whale sharks and manta rays to shark exhibits and a towering kelp forest, these nine operator-led aquarium experiences offer very different ways to get underwater.

Aquarium dives offer something open water cannot guarantee: a close look at large marine animals in a carefully managed environment. The entry is predictable, visibility is usually excellent and the entire experience is supported by aquarium staff or professional dive operators.

That does not make every aquarium program the same. Some are conventional scuba dives for certified divers. Others introduce first-time participants to scuba under close supervision. One uses a surface-supplied breathing system inside a shark cage rather than independent scuba equipment.

Naturally Buoyant Media reviewed nine current, publicly bookable aquarium experiences in the Dive Site Search. They range from shallow coral exhibits in the United States to a 12-metre descent in Singapore and a choice of shark, open-ocean or kelp-forest habitats in South Africa.

## 1. Georgia Aquarium: Journey with Gentle Giants

[Georgia Aquarium — Journey with Gentle Giants Dive](/dive-sites/georgia-aquarium-ocean-voyager-dive-ga) places certified divers in the Ocean Voyager habitat with whale sharks, manta rays, sea turtles and thousands of fish.

The Atlanta program is reservation-only and intended for certified divers age 12 and older who meet the aquarium’s current medical and participation requirements. The dive generally remains within the 20-to-30-foot range, making the animals—not depth—the main attraction.

This is the standout choice for divers whose aquarium wish list begins with whale sharks. As with every animal encounter, sightings, positioning and daily operations remain under the aquarium’s control.

## 2. EPCOT: Seas Adventures – DiveQuest

[EPCOT Seas Adventures – DiveQuest](/dive-sites/epcot-seas-adventures-divequest) takes place in the 5.7-million-gallon saltwater environment at The Seas with Nemo & Friends. Disney describes more than 2,000 aquatic animals in the habitat and approximately 40 minutes underwater within a two-hour experience.

Participants must be at least 10 and hold an Open Water scuba certification. Guests under 16 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Disney supplies the dive equipment and permits a personal mask, but cameras, phones and other recording equipment are prohibited backstage and in the water.

Theme-park admission is not required for the participating diver. The program is especially appealing to families or groups in which non-divers would like to watch through the exhibit windows.

## 3. Maui Ocean Center: Shark Dive Maui

[Maui Ocean Center — Shark Dive Maui](/dive-sites/maui-ocean-center-shark-dive-maui) is a cage-free experience in the aquarium’s 750,000-gallon Open Ocean exhibit. The operator advertises approximately 30 minutes underwater, a maximum depth of 21 feet and encounters with Hawaiian sharks, rays and hundreds of fish. Group size is limited to four divers.

A current Open Water certification is required. The official page presently contains conflicting minimum-age information—one section says 13 and older while another says 12 and older—so families should confirm the current requirement directly before booking.

The aquarium also advises divers to wait at least 24 hours before flying or traveling to the summit of Haleakalā. That altitude restriction is easy to overlook when planning a Maui itinerary.

## 4. Downtown Aquarium Denver: Shark Cage Experience

[Downtown Aquarium Denver — Shark Cage Experience](/dive-sites/downtown-aquarium-denver-shark-cage-experience) is different from the other programs in this feature. It is an underwater animal encounter, but it is not a certification-required scuba dive.

Participants breathe through a surface-supplied regulator while remaining inside a cage in the aquarium’s 400,000-gallon Shipwreck exhibit. A-1 Scuba operates the experience for guests age eight and older, and no prior diving experience or scuba certification is required.

The advertised underwater portion lasts about 20 minutes. The habitat includes several shark species along with sawfish, barracudas, sea turtles and other fish. It is an approachable option for a non-diver, but it should not be confused with scuba training or an open-water certification dive.

## 5. National Aquarium Baltimore: Guest Diver Program

[National Aquarium Baltimore — Guest Diver Program](/dive-sites/national-aquarium-baltimore-guest-diver-program) is conducted by Atlantic Edge Dive Center in the aquarium’s 335,000-gallon Atlantic Coral Reef exhibit.

The roughly three-hour program includes a mandatory classroom session and approximately 40 minutes in the water among more than 1,000 animals representing over 70 species. The exhibit reaches about 13 feet and is maintained near 76°F.

Participants must be 18 or older and hold a full Open Water certification or equivalent; a PADI Scuba Diver credential does not qualify. Divers bring their own wetsuit, mask, snorkel, booties and fins, while Atlantic Edge supplies the regulator, BCD, cylinder and weights. Aquarium admission is separate.

## 6. SEA LIFE Melbourne: Shark Dive Xtreme

[SEA LIFE Melbourne — Shark Dive Xtreme](/dive-sites/sea-life-melbourne-shark-dive-xtreme) gives first-time and experienced participants a cage-free dive in the Night on the Reef exhibit with tawny nurse sharks, leopard sharks, rays and green sea turtles.

No previous scuba certification is required. Participants must be at least 14, possess a reasonable swimming ability and complete the required medical review before booking.

The full experience lasts approximately 2.5 to three hours, including a 90-minute introduction and safety briefing followed by a dive of about 30 minutes. Equipment, a wetsuit and same-day aquarium admission are included under the current program description.

## 7. Dubai Aquarium: Shark Dive

[Dubai Aquarium — Shark Dive](/dive-sites/dubai-aquarium-shark-dive) accommodates both certified divers and first-time participants. Certified guests present a recognized credential, while non-certified participants complete a short Discover Scuba program and the required medical questionnaire through the aquarium’s diving partner.

The minimum advertised age is 10. Dives take place in the main tank among sand tiger, reef, leopard and tawny nurse sharks, along with rays, groupers and hundreds of fish.

The aquarium currently advertises three shark dives per day with a maximum of four divers in each time slot. A divemaster and instructor supervise the experience, and a full set of equipment is included.

## 8. Two Oceans Aquarium: Adventure Diving

[Two Oceans Aquarium — Adventure Diving](/dive-sites/two-oceans-aquarium-adventure-diving) offers something unusual: qualified divers can choose among three distinctly different exhibits.

The Save Our Seas Foundation Shark Exhibit features cage-free encounters with ragged-tooth sharks. The I&J Ocean Exhibit offers stingrays and temperate open-ocean life. The Kelp Forest Exhibit places divers among towering fronds of giant sea bamboo.

Adventure Diving requires an Open Water-level certification or equivalent. A refresher is required if the participant has not dived in the previous six months. Non-divers age 10 and older have a separate PADI Discover Scuba option through the aquarium’s dive school.

The Cape Town facility advertises both equipment-inclusive and own-gear booking choices, making this one of the most flexible aquarium-diving destinations in the group.

## 9. Singapore Oceanarium: Open Ocean Dive

[Singapore Oceanarium — Open Ocean Dive](/dive-sites/singapore-oceanarium-open-ocean-dive) is the deepest published experience in this group, descending as far as 12 metres, or approximately 39 feet, in the Open Ocean habitat.

The 90-minute program includes briefing, orientation, equipment setup and an approximately 30-minute dive with manta rays, large groupers and schools of fish. The advertised group size is six, and the operator supplies a full set of scuba equipment and a wetsuit.

Participants must be at least 10 and hold certification from an internationally recognized dive organization. The program currently operates on a limited schedule and requires advance arrival, medical and liability declarations, and compliance with post-dive flying restrictions.

## Which experience fits you?

For certified divers seeking major-animal encounters, Georgia Aquarium, Maui Ocean Center, EPCOT, National Aquarium Baltimore, Two Oceans Aquarium and Singapore Oceanarium offer distinctly different settings.

First-time participants have several alternatives. SEA LIFE Melbourne provides an instructor-led cage-free introduction. Dubai Aquarium offers a Discover Scuba pathway. Two Oceans Aquarium operates a separate Discover Scuba program. Denver’s Shark Cage Experience requires no certification but uses surface-supplied breathing equipment rather than standard scuba.

Depth should not be the only deciding factor. Consider the animals, exhibit design, group size, equipment rules, minimum age, physical requirements and whether non-diving companions can watch.

## What to confirm before booking

Aquarium dives remain real pressure exposures with medical, equipment and post-dive travel considerations. Before paying, confirm:

- whether the program is scuba, surface-supplied or snorkeling; - the precise certification and minimum-age requirement; - medical-clearance and swimming requirements; - what equipment is supplied and what must be brought; - camera restrictions and whether personal gear is permitted; - post-dive flying or altitude restrictions; - whether aquarium admission is included; and - whether the program is operating on your intended date.

Schedules, prices, animal visibility and operating rules can change without notice. Each NBM profile is a planning starting point. Verify the current details directly with the aquarium or operating dive center before booking.
